Pinzgauer cattle herd books go back to 600 AD. The Alpine herdsmen started breeding red and white cattle in the Austrian Alps. These cattle were bred to withstand the harsh winters and conditions while maintaining good beef and milk production. Because of their development on small family farms they also aquired exceptional docility. These qualities make them highly desireable for small operations. Pinzgauers were first introduced into the US in 1974. Their color, red, pigmented skin, white top line and belly, makes them desease resistant. Eye problems, pink-eye, are rare. Mature bulls average 2000 lbs, while cows level out around 1200 to 1600 lbs. Research testing has consistantly rated Pinzgauer cattle at or near the top in every catagory.
